A Visit From Kellog the Miniature Horse

This month at Oakdene, we had a special visit from Kellog, the miniature horse. This special afternoon brought smiles and joy to our residents and their relatives as they gathered to meet and interact with our adorable visitor.

Residents had the opportunity to ask questions about Kellog, learn more about his unique history, and share their own stories which were brilliant to hear. Many residents reminisced about their past experiences of owning horses or living on farms with animals, sparking warm memories and lively conversations throughout the home. The event became even more exciting when residents discovered that Kellog is not only adored locally but is also a celebrity, having appeared on the BBC.

Pet therapy has been shown to have significant benefits on the quality of life, particularly for older adults. Interaction with animals can reduce stress, lower blood pressure, and improve overall mental health by providing relaxation and joy. For our residents, Kellog’s visit brought not just entertainment but also therapeutic comfort, enhancing emotional well-being and fostering a sense of calm and happiness. The positive effects of pet therapy shone whilst our residents engaged with Kellog and found that moments of peace and connection lingered long after Kellog left. Comments like “When is Kellog coming back?” and “We loved him being here with us” echoed throughout Oakdene, proving how much joy and warmth he brought.

Kellog’s presence also provided an opportunity for residents and their loved ones to connect with the team. It was a truly memorable experience that reinforced the importance of shared moments and providing a regular activities programme and we look forward to many more events like this at Oakdene, continuing to enrich the lives of our residents and creating cherished memories for all.
