A Special Valentine’s Day at Oakdene

Love, laughter, and togetherness filled Oakdene this Valentine’s Day as we created a truly heartwarming celebration for our residents and their families. Our dedicated activities team carefully planned a day full of joy, ensuring that everyone—whether spending time with visiting loved ones or celebrating among friends—felt cherished and included.

To make the day truly special, we invited relatives to join their loved ones for a beautifully prepared three-course lunch meal, lovingly crafted by our talented chef. The dining room was set up with elegant decorations, creating a warm and intimate atmosphere where families could enjoy precious moments together. It was particularly moving to see three wives join their husbands for the meal, sharing time that was both meaningful and full of love. For those who were unable to attend the afternoon sitting, we arranged a delightful cream tea experience later in the evening, complete with an assortment of cakes, warm scones, and a selection of teas. Families who attended expressed their gratitude, saying how much it meant to have the opportunity to celebrate together in such a thoughtful way.

We know that Valentine’s Day can be a sensitive time, especially for those who have lost partners, which is why we wanted to ensure that every resident felt included and uplifted. The day was about more than just romantic love—it was about celebrating all the different kinds of love that bring us joy. For residents who did not have visiting family, we organised a variety of engaging activities, including a Valentine’s quiz, card-making, and music sessions. Every resident received a small chocolate heart as a token of our love and appreciation for them, which brought smiles to everybody's faces. One particularly touching moment was when Linda, one of our residents, wrote a heartfelt Valentine’s card to her cousin, expressing how much she missed and appreciated them. She described the day here at Oakdene as a "beautiful" moment that brought her comfort and happiness.

There was plenty of laughter and even some singing, with staff and residents coming together to celebrate in the best way possible and create a true sense of community. Seeing so many smiles and hearing words of appreciation from families reminded us why these events are so important.
